On 17 April, the Corporate and Insolvency Bar Association (CIBA) hosted its annual conference, bringing together leading practitioners and members of the judiciary for a wide-ranging programme of discussion and insight.
The event was formally opened by John Kennedy SC, Chair of CIBA, who welcomed attendees and set the tone for the day’s proceedings. This was followed by an address from the Attorney General, Rossa Fanning SC, who offered his perspective on current developments in corporate and insolvency law.
The first panel of the day focused on “Avoiding pitfalls in corporate litigation.” Chaired by Shelley Horan SC, the discussion featured contributions from Mr Justice Oisín Quinn, Eoin McCullough SC, Stephen Brady BL, and Kieran Wallace of Interpath. The panel provided practical guidance on navigating common challenges in corporate disputes, drawing on both judicial and practitioner experience.
Attention then turned to the increasingly relevant topic of equitable remedies in insolvency settings. In a detailed and engaging lecture, Caren Geoghegan SC and Katie Nagle BL examined how equitable principles operate in an insolvency context, highlighting recent developments and key considerations for practitioners.
The programme continued with a panel on “Issues in cross-border liquidations,” chaired by John Lavelle BL. Speakers Kelley Smith SC, Keith Farry BL, and John Donald of Arthur Cox explored the complexities that arise in multi-jurisdictional insolvency proceedings, offering valuable insights into coordination, recognition, and practical challenges.
One of the highlights of the conference was a fireside chat with Ms Justice Costello, President of the Court of Appeal, who was in conversation with Mr Justice Michael Quinn. This informal session provided attendees with a unique opportunity to hear reflections on the appellate process and broader legal developments.
The conference concluded with closing remarks from John Kennedy SC, who reflected on the themes of the day and thanked the speakers and attendees for their contributions to a highly successful event.
